I often find that when I’m feeling down the first thing to go out the window is my self-care. Especially if I’m feeling depressed, it can feel like climbing a mountain just to brush my teeth!! That’s why I gathered some self care ideas for mental health.
I’m sure we have all been there…you feel so down you just want to stay in bed all day and shut the world out. Sometimes we need to have a duvet day but what if that day turns to a week or even a month?!
Making sure we still do a little bit of self-care, even if it’s just 5 minutes, on these days is crucial!
Just showing ourselves a little bit of self-love can help us start to feel like things will get better. Because that’s what self-care is, it’s an act of love to ourselves and it proves that we deserve love, especially from ourselves.
Therefore the more of these small acts of self-love you do in the day, the faster you will start to feel good again!!

Self Care Ideas for Mental Health
Take Care Of Your Body
Take a long relaxing bath and use your favourite body moisturiser and don’t skip on washing your face or doing your hair. Do anything that will make you feel good in your own body.
I always give myself a little foot massage, I find it really relaxing.
Eat Something Healthy
I know it’s easy to go straight for the junk food but it’s only going to make you feel worse. It might feel like an effort to cook but for me, it actually helps me feel focused. It also feels good knowing you are making something that’s good for your health.
It feels like I’m treating myself…..it’s just more self-love!
Get In Nature
Nature is the most relaxing place to be when you’re feeling down, they even say that looking at nature on the TV calms the nervous system down (don’t use that as an excuse to not go out haha).
Take a walk in the park or the woods and really try to stay present and mindful. Take in all the beauty, it really does help!!
Gentle Yoga
Yoga is great for moving tension and stuck energy in your body, it really is powerful to get rid of stuck emotions.
I love Yoga with Adriene and here are a few of my favourite gentle yoga videos
Guided Meditations
When I’m feeling down or anxious I cannot sit down and try and still my mind, it just doesn’t happen!
I can sometimes feel irritated when I try. When I feel like this I always try a guided meditation, I find them easier because all I have to do is listen and follow the instructions.
I don’t have to do any work!
Here are some of my fave ones:
Take A Break From Social Media
This tip could have the biggest impact on your mood!! Looking on social media and seeing how “amazing” everyone else’s life is when your feeling down, is just going to make you feel so much worse.
I’ve recently had a 2-month break from Facebook because I felt it was affecting my mental health and it has made a huge difference.
I’m not saying you have to be that drastic but maybe try it for a day or 2 and see how you feel?
You may find life is better off social media or that you can start to be on it less.
The most important thing to know when you’re feeling down is it won’t last and whatever you need right now, you have the capacity to give that to yourself.
If that is love, kindness, a cup of tea, whatever you need, know that it’s more powerful when you can give and care for yourself.
Let me know in the comments below what your favourite self-care rituals are for when you’re feeling down.
